The exact conversion, in one line

A mile is 1.609 kilometers. Everything else follows.

To go from minutes per mile to minutes per kilometer, divide by 1.609. To go from minutes per kilometer to minutes per mile, multiply by 1.609.

That is the whole math. The rest of this post is what to do with it in a race and in a training plan.

A worked example

8:00 per mile ÷ 1.609 = 4.97 min per km, which is 4:58 per km. Going back: 5:00 per km × 1.609 = 8.05 min per mile, which is 8:03 per mile.

Two nudges most runners miss. First, the decimal is not the seconds. 4.97 min is not "four minutes and 97 seconds." Multiply the decimal part by 60. 0.97 × 60 = 58, so 4.97 min becomes 4:58, not 4:97. Second, round at the end, not in the middle, or a 10K plan drifts by 10 to 15 seconds per kilometer.

A pace conversion chart worth pinning up

You do not need the whole range of possible paces. You need the ones you actually run, from 5K effort to easy days. This is the range that covers most training and racing for most runners.

Two things this chart does that a generic online converter does not. It lines up the paces you actually train at, and it puts both units on the same row, so you can see the whole shape of your training range in one glance. Print it, or copy the two or three rows you care about onto the back of a race bib. The paces you look at often are the paces you internalize.

The mental math trick I give athletes racing abroad

You will not have a calculator on the start line. You need a mental shortcut that is accurate enough to make race-day decisions in the first mile.

The trick. Multiply min/km by 1.6, or divide min/mile by 1.6. Close enough to the true 1.609 that you will be within 2 seconds per mile at every marathon pace.

Practice it in advance. 5:00/km × 1.6 = 8:00/mile. 4:30/km × 1.6 = 7:12/mile. 3:45/km × 1.6 = 6:00/mile. Do this three or four times on your commute the week before the race and the numbers will be waiting for you when the first kilometer marker appears.

If your watch is set to miles and the marker is in kilometers, ignore the marker split for a beat, take your watch's current pace, apply the multiplier, and check the number against your plan. Do not try to convert the marker's clock time in your head at mile 3 of a marathon. That is the arithmetic that sends runners out at the wrong pace.

Why this matters more than it looks

I coach a small roster and about 3 in 10 of them race abroad in a given year, mostly Berlin, London, Valencia, and Tokyo. The most common race-morning problem is not fitness. It is that the course markers, the aid stations, and the pace signs are all in kilometers, and their training plan was in miles. They do not lose the race in the middle. They lose it in the first three kilometers, because 5:20/km reads like a sensible number and they were supposed to be running 5:40/km.

Same on the training side. Most of the US running internet writes paces in miles, while most peer-reviewed sports-science literature and most European coaches write them in km. A workout prescription of "6 x 1 km at 3:50/km" arrives in your inbox and, if you translate it wrong on the fly, you either drift the workout easier or bury yourself in the first rep. Convert once, at the desk, before you lace up.

Two places the confusion shows up most often in my athletes' training:

  • The imported plan. A block published in km, opened in a US kitchen, and executed on a mile-marked GPS watch. Convert every workout the day it appears, not the morning of.
  • The wrong-unit race band. A pace band bought from a US site for a European marathon will hand you mile splits when the course is marked in km. You then spend the whole race doing arithmetic instead of running. Print your own with both columns, side by side, or use the pace calculator, which prints every VDOT-derived training pace in both units at once.

The two rules I give athletes running in the other unit

There are only two rules, and they are dull rules on purpose.

  1. Convert on paper, once, before the run. Not on the watch during the warm-up. Not at the start line. Every pace target and every marker split, written out in both units, taped to your forearm or the back of your bib.
  2. Race in the unit the course is marked in. If you are running Berlin, set the watch to km and think in km for the six weeks beforehand. If you are running Chicago, set it to miles. Racing on a course whose markers do not match your watch pace is a self-inflicted problem, and the first two kilometers cost more than the last two.

What to do tomorrow

If a race in the other unit is on the calendar, five minutes of setup buys back the first three kilometers on race day.

  1. Set your GPS watch to the unit of the course you are racing.
  2. Convert every pace target in your plan to that unit. Write both columns.
  3. Print or write out a race-pace band with your target split at every kilometer or every mile, whichever the course uses.
  4. On the next long run, glance only at the target unit's pace, and let the other one go.
  5. On race morning, trust the paper. Do not try to redo the math in your head at the start.

The math is a mile is 1.609 kilometers. The coaching is that you settle the conversion at the kitchen table, so that at kilometer 3 of the race you are thinking about your breathing and not doing sixth-grade arithmetic with a heart rate of 165.
